Rising along Richmond’s historic riverfront, the James A. Buzzard River Education Center is an inspiring new landmark dedicated to connecting our community to the James River. Created as a hub for environmental education, the center strengthens the mission of the James River Association and supports Virginia’s goal of ensuring every student experiences meaningful watershed learning before graduation. Thoughtfully designed with a living roof and elevated to withstand 100- and 500-year flood levels — and built without an elevator to minimize environmental impact — the building itself reflects the resilience of the river it celebrates. Inside, visitors can explore engaging classroom spaces, hands-on aquariums, and even a classroom right on the river via canoes and pontoon boats. Named in honor of former James River Association Chairman James A. Buzzard, this center is more than a building — it’s a gateway to a healthier, more connected future for the James River.
